Hidden Gems in Montenegro: 6 Places Worth Visiting

Kotor, Budva and Sveti Stefan are among the country’s best-known destinations, but Montenegro also has quieter places that are often left out of standard travel plans.

From old settlements around Lake Skadar to mountain landscapes in the north, these places show how many different views and stories can fit into one small country. Some are suitable for a short trip, while others deserve a full day.

1. Rijeka Crnojevića and Pavlova Strana

Rijeka Crnojevića is a small historic settlement on the way to Lake Skadar. Its old stone bridge, quiet waterfront and traditional houses create a very different atmosphere from the busy towns on the coast.

Nearby is Pavlova Strana, a viewpoint with one of the best-known views over the winding river, wetlands and surrounding hills. It is best visited in clear weather, when the river’s curves are fully visible.

2. Karuč and Dodoši

Karuč and Dodoši are small settlements beside Lake Skadar, ideal for travelers looking for quiet surroundings, nature and a local atmosphere. Here you can see old stone houses, fishing boats and parts of the lake that are much calmer than the better-known tourist stops.

These places are a good choice for a slow day trip, lunch beside the lake or a boat ride. The journey is part of the experience, passing through small villages and landscapes that are rarely included in standard tourist routes.

3. Lake Piva and Plužine

Lake Piva is surrounded by steep mountains and deep canyons, making it one of the most striking places in northwestern Montenegro. The color of the water and the mountain scenery change with the weather and time of day.

Plužine is a good starting point for relaxing beside the lake and exploring the Piva region. The road to this part of the country offers viewpoints, tunnels and scenery that can make the journey as memorable as the destination.

4. Gusinje and Ali Pasha Springs

Gusinje lies beneath the Prokletije mountains and offers a completely different experience of Montenegro from the coast. It is surrounded by mountains, valleys and places that provide a good base for exploring the northeastern part of the country.

Ali Pasha Springs are located a short distance from the town. Water emerges from several natural springs, with the Prokletije mountains rising in the background. The area combines nature, local food and a quieter atmosphere.

5. Crkvice on Mount Orjen

Crkvice is an almost abandoned mountain settlement in the Orjen area, known for the remains of a large Austro-Hungarian military complex. Ruins of former barracks, military buildings and fortifications can still be seen among the trees.

The place has an unusual, almost cinematic atmosphere. It is interesting for travelers who enjoy history, architecture and less familiar locations, but weather and road conditions should be checked before visiting.

6. Old Bar

A few kilometers from modern Bar lies Old Bar, a historic settlement beneath Mount Rumija. Inside its walls, traces of different Mediterranean and Balkan cultures meet.

The old aqueduct, fortress, stone streets and views toward the surrounding mountains make Old Bar one of the most interesting historic places in southern Montenegro. A visit can easily be combined with Bar and other destinations on the Montenegrin coast.

Montenegro beyond the best-known routes

The most rewarding part of exploring Montenegro often begins when you move away from the country’s best-known tourist stops. Some of these places can be visited on a day trip, while the more distant mountain areas deserve extra time and an advance check of weather conditions.
